The new national standard for stone classification officially distinguishes between dolomite and marble, clarifying that dolomite is a metamorphic sedimentary rock of calcium magnesium carbonate and is no longer classified as marble. Dolomite has a highly similar appearance to marble, with a delicate and warm texture, soft luster, and a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4, slightly higher than marble. Its strength, wear resistance, and weathering resistance are all superior to ordinary marble.
Dolomite still belongs to carbonate stone, which is not resistant to strong acids and will corrode and lose its luster when exposed to acidic substances. However, it has better overall stability, uniform color difference, and a much lower price than natural marble. It is currently the most mainstream affordable substitute material for marble in the market. Application specifications are clear: Dolomite is only suitable for mid-range decorative spaces such as indoor wall backgrounds, living room floors, window sills, door frame lines, etc; Only low rise exterior walls in dry areas can be used outdoors. Outdoor use is prohibited in acid rain and severe cold areas, and cannot be used for kitchen countertops with high-frequency oil pollution and wear.
Baiyun stone is easy to cut, polish, and create irregular lines, with excellent processing performance. It is natural, radiation free, environmentally friendly, and safe, and has significant cost advantages for large-scale decoration. The disadvantages are less texture variation, lower luxury grade compared to natural marble, and far less wear resistance than granite quartzite. Currently, affordable home decoration and large-scale interior decoration of public workwear extensively use dolomite, effectively reducing decoration costs while retaining the warm and elegant decorative effect of marble. The dolomite industry continues to standardize grading and protection standards, further improving the stability of use and consolidating its position as a mid-range economical indoor decoration material
